Trades Rules
|
TRADES
|
|
Players may be traded between teams from the conclusion
of the draft up until kickoff of the 9th week of the NFL season and there
is no limit to the number of trades a team can make during that period.
Trades must include the same number of players, and must stay within the
restrictions of the 22-man roster. For example, a team trading a running
back must receive a running back from the team they are trading with in
order to keep 6 running backs on both rosters.
Note that the trading deadline is only for player trades
between teams. Owners are free to add and drop players via free agency
and waivers as usual throughout the entire season and the playoffs.
Beginning with the 2001 season, the league has imposed
a restriction on trades that involve money. Known as The Ed "Stein"-Brenner
Rule, this rule states that no team may purchase another team's player
and no team may make a trade offering cash money as compensation. The only
exception to this rule is that teams may negotiate who is responsible for
paying any applicable transaction fees.
