SPECIAL REPORT:
Bullseye... or Bullshit?
League owners, we have now finished our 4th
regular season since the FFL converted to a head-to-head format. And once
again, Bullseye has captured the Most Overall Points prize for their regular
season dominance. This marks the 3rd time in the 4 year history of the
league that they have accomplished this feat. Only in 1999 did they not
score the most points, as they came in 4th on the overall scoring list.
Despite their regular season prowess, where they have clearly been superior
to all their competitors, Bullseye has only 1 lifetime playoff victory.
Which begs the question - and the topic of this special report:
Bullseye... or Bullshit?
Believe me, the comparisons are out there.
Many owners have called them the Buffalo Bills of the FFL. Some have compared
them to the Atlanta Braves. But my favorite quote, as one owner so eloquently
put it, "They draft for the regular season. Not for the playoffs."
This quote holds some truth, in the sense
that Bullseye has been predominantly silent when it comes to making in-season
transactions. Rarely do they scour the waiver wire, usually waiting until
a key player becomes seriously injured before they edit their roster. Some
have insinuated that since the league began charging transaction fees,
they are even more reluctant to pull the trigger. In 1999, they made only
two player additions and also made one 2-player trade. This season they
have made four player additions and one blockbuster, opening night, cash
influenced trade.
Bullseye
Whether you like it or not, the numbers do
not lie. Bullseye has been right on target this year having led the league
in scoring with 1,417 points. That is a new record and it surpassed the
previously highest scoring regular season point total of 1,309 - which
they also set in 1998. This season they won 8 games by an average of 44.4
points per game! Their five losses were by an average of 9.8 points per
game this year. Due to the tiebreaker, Bullseye didn't win any regular
season cash prizes for overall record, but they did grab the $200 that
comes with leading the league in scoring. Adding that to their previous
winnings, Bullseye jumps into the lead for all-time career earnings having
earned $900 in the last four years.
Against their opponents in the regular season,
Bullseye has an all-time 32-20-0 win-loss record. That's a .615 wining
percentage, tops in the league. So they obviously get the job done in the
regular season. There should be no doubt about that. But to most owners,
the regular season is a stepping stone. It is the pre-game warmup to the
real season that begins annually at Week 14 of the NFL season. Making the
playoffs and winning the FFL Super Bowl is the ultimate fantasy accolade.
And, compared to their regular season outings, when it comes to the playoffs,
Bullseye has been...
Bullshit
One playoff victory in 4 years. In 1997 they
beat the Ass Monkeys before losing to T.T.M.F. Little Johnny in the Super
Bowl. That was a bitter defeat. Memories of Rod Smith's dropsies and Terrell
Davis's early game injury still haunt the Bullseye franchise. A one point
loss, that's all it was. But it was a loss nonetheless. Their other playoff
loss? Well, that was a one point loss as well! And they will recall J.J.
Stokes' overall ineptitude as the culprit in that defeat. Going back down
memory lane, Bullseye trailed by 4 points heading into Monday's game with
Stokes still on their roster. They only needed 35 yards from him, as they
held the tiebreaker over their opponent. Early in the contest, Stokes caught
an 11 yard pass and later followed it with an 18 yard reception. They only
needed 6 more yards the rest of the way to pull off the win. They never
got it. Who was their opponent that week? None other than this week's first
round opponent, Santana's No Randy! TNT©!
After that game, the blood was boiling. Bullseye
had this to say to their opponent:
"Feel good about your shitty team because
once again the Monday night chisel got us but when we outscore the league
by 100 points we all know that the best team is not in the Super Bowl."
They followed that up with:
"You kicked our ass by a WHOLE POINT!
You know like everyone else, one week is luck. The overall points demonstrates
SKILLS! I don't plan on giving that up for a long time!"
With such fond memories, you know that Bullseye
is out for revenge this week. They need to win this week. They need to
win this year's Super Bowl. Anything less would be a complete failure,
giving the league one more major reason to consider them the biggest choke
franchise in the league.
As Santana said in 1998, after their one point
victory...
"It's tough to win a playoff game with
4 hands around your throat!"
