WEEK FOURTEEN REPORT
(Playoffs Round One)
We can say goodbye to The Fat Bus and Scott's
"All they Know How To Do Is Score" Savants. Both teams lost their
first round playoff game and will have some extra time to prepare for next
year's draft. Advancing to the second round were P.O.B.'s Pounders and
The Pussy Willows.
Here is a recap of the Round One contests:
|
P.O.B.'s Pounders (#3
seed) defeated The Fat Bus (#6
seed), 89-73
The Pounders led the league in scoring this
year while The Fat Bus didn't really deserve to even qualify for the playoffs.
This one was over before it started. If it was not for the horrible weather
condition in the Monday game, the margin of victory for the Pounders would
have been a lot larger. In defense of The Fat Bus, they have struggled
through some pretty devastating injuries and frequent doses of bad luck
all season long. They should be commended for even getting this far. Commish
note:I said they "should" be commended, not that I was actually
commending them. Two teams are required to come out of the Hair Conference
for the playoffs, and with competitors like T.T.M.F.N. and St. John's Ragin'
Amies, it was a coin flip between the Bus and Chisel Squad.

The Pussy Willows (#5
seed) defeated Scott's ... Savants (#4
seed), 97-94
The good news for the Savants this year was
that they finally made the playoffs. The bad news was that they still do
not have a playoff victory and their career earnings is still $0. That
is not good - especially when you consider Team Rueff Dog (or was it Rais'n
the Rueff?) won a token $5 with a 3-10 record! In such a close game, many
little things contributed to the Pussy Willows' victory. Most notably,
was the Savants decision to bench BOTH Jacksonville running backs, James
Stewart and Fred Taylor, and start Duce Staley of the Philadelphia Eagles.
While Jacksonville was a heavy favorite at home, Duce had to travel to
Dallas and face one of the best defenses in the league. Also left off the
Savants' roster was red-hot Tony Gonzales, who ended up scoring two TDs
against a poor Minnesota secondary. Starting in his place was the oft-injured
Herman Moore, who struggled mightily against Tampa Bay (another top defensive
team in the NFL).

O.K., here is the updated playoff bracket:
Playoff Schedule
Here is a preview of the Second Round games:
P.O.B.'s Pounders
(#3 seed) vs. Jo Boo's Browns Backers
(#2 seed)
Both teams have QB issues this week. Both
Brunell and Gannon of the Pounders are inconsistent, while all of the Backers
QBs are either suffering from post-concussion syndrome, or still playing
like diminutive CFL hurlers. One thing is for sure, and that is the winner
of this contest will be decided at running back. With Edgerrin James on
one side and Marshall Faulk on the other, there are many points to be had
at halfback! I will give the nod to the Pounders in this game, however.
They definitely have the better wide receivers, and if their QB can muster
up 15 points, they should advance to the Super Bowl.
The Pussy Willows
(#5 seed) vs. Randy's Rocket
(#3 seed)
This is a very difficult matchup to forecast.
Both teams have the potential to post over 120 points in any given week,
but both teams are suffering injuries to core players. For the Willows,
WR Cris Carter has a serious ankle injury, while RB Emmitt Smith
of Randy's Rocket might not see action on Sunday. The Willows are riding
a five-game winning streak, but RB Corey Dillon has a bye this week.
Randy's Rocket - the defending Super Bowl champion - has three of its top
players going in the Monday game. It could be all or nothing from that
standpoint.
