2006 Week 9 Report
|
With the completion of Week Nine, the league
trading deadline has passed. There will be no more fire sales this season.
There are only 4 weeks left in the regular season, and it looks like we
will have a close, exciting finish as teams compete for the four remaining
playoffs. I say four because the two Division leaders, Bush-Whacked and
Old Joe, are both 7-2 and have virtually clinched spots.
One thing that has been puzzling me this year
is the availability of starting quarterbacks that teams can pick up and
play on a weekly basis. In recent weeks teams have picked up QBs such as
Tony Romo, Seneca Wallace, David Garrard and Damon Huard - just to name
a few. These players have made for great starts and have been producing.
So why were they available? I understand franchise owners can't consistently
be playing the free agency game, but there has been some available talent
that teams are ignoring. Surely the $1 transaction fee for player pickups
isn't deterring teams from making moves. Or is it? When you do not upgrade
your team roster with better players you are allowing your rivals to get
better. Of course, if teams can't even start players who are not on bye
weeks (Mare) or have been inactivated days before their game (Horn), how
can they be expected to replace a 3rd string QB with a solid starting QB
on a winning, high scoring team?
Here are the results for Week Nine:
Old Joe (7-2) defeated
P.O.B.'s Pounders (5-4),
102-101. The
dreaded MNC! The Pounders were handed the chisel this week as WR Deion
Branch scored 12 points on Monday night and gave Old Joe the one point
win. The Pounders missed a lot of opportunities to win this game, including
a fumble by WR Hines Ward as he was diving across the end zone line
as well as numerous dropped passes from WR Troy Williamson (who finished
with a mere 4 yards receiving).
Bush-Whacked (7-2)
defeated Jo-Boo's Browns Backers (3-6),
108-85. Jo-Boo
has made some trades this year, including one last week to shore up his
franchise player options for next year. Unfortunately, none of those trades
helped his team. Bush-Whacked is getting it done ugly, but still getting
it done. At 7-2, they are looking like a lock to win their weak division,
the Hair Conference.
Schwein Fire (4-5)
defeated Special Team (1-8),
109-83. Special
Team can't catch a break. Even when one of their receivers has a monster
game - Javon Walker scored 36 points - they still get their ass kicked.
Eight straigfht losses. Ouch!!! The Schwein Fire squad is not out
of it yet. They are certainly a threat to take one of the playoff berths.
Keep your eye on them, especially if their RBs continue to post stellar
scores.
Gold Grill (5-4)
defeated The Savants (3-6),
104-91. One of
the teams that has surprised the most this season is Gold Grill. At 5-4
they are right in the hunt and they have been doing well despite star player
Chad Johnson's terrible start. If he begins to play like the all-pro receiver
we all expect him to play like, this squad might just make a run deep into the
playoffs.
The Steins (5-4)
defeated The Fat Bus
(5-4), 90-67.
The Bus wasn't going anywhere this week. Eli Manning put up another disappointing
performance and their crappy receivers are playing as expected: crappy.
The Steins are winning with a mediocre lineup each week. Besides Peyton
Manning and Brian Westbrook (who was on a bye this week), their team is
a Who's Who of third-string talent. At least they won this week, and Eddie
won't be salts for awhile.
Stay tuned for more fun and taunts next week.
