2005 Week 1 Report

After a long off season, the NFL is back in action... and so is our fantasy league. We had some close games to start off this season, with a couple of teams suffering very painful losses. The joys of the Taunt FFL!

Here are the results from the opening week of play:

Feature game of the week
Who-Dey Delight (1-0) defeated The Steins (0-1), 97-95. This close game was capped off with a miniature Monday Night Chisel. Needing 17 points from RB Brian Westbrook last night, The Steins were excited when the explosive tailback posted 9 first quarter points. Then he went M.I.A. for a long stretch and finished two points shy of the mark. Not a good start for The Steins, who no doubt feel silly losing to the franchise that just acquired co-owner Sir William Edwards. Adding injury to insult, The Steins also found out on Monday that their #1 pick in the 2005 draft, WR Javon Walker, is out for the year. Ouch! As for Who-Dey Delight, the league was hoping they would change their name this year. It still sounds like the name of a bad asian porno flick.

Here are the rest of the results for Week One:

P.O.B.'s Pounders (1-0) defeated E-Z Money (0-1), 75-74. What an ugly game. Neither team could muster many points this weekend, and losing by one really smarts. Too bad for E-Z Money that their placekicker, the usually reliable Matt Stover, missed all three of his field goal attempts on Sunday night. He ended up only posting 1 total point for the game. The Pounders were not very impresive this week, but I am sure they are happy with the win. Both of these squads better hope they can pick up the pace going forward.

Jo-Boo's Browns Backers (1-0) defeated The Running Monks (0-1), 79-63. Another crappy game. Jo-Boo is just happy to get the win, even though only one of their players did anything substantial this week. WR Jimmy Smith led the league in receiver points posting 23 points overall. The Running Monks were the low scoring team on the week. Their receivers look to be the worst in the entire league and I suspect they might struggle for much of the year. Unless Priest can carry this team, they are going to have one of the highest picks in next year's draft.

Receiver U. (1-0) defeated Orange Julius (0-1), 129-84. In this rematch of last year's Super Bowl game the two-time defending champions came out firing on opening weekend. Receiver U. got quality production from every position and claimed the early lead in the Overall Points race. Orange Julius looked a bit suspect this week with a few of their players looking to be a bit overrated. Relying on the Houston Texan offense might be a thorn in their side all year.

Cinnamon Roll Nation (1-0) defeated The Fat Bus (0-2), 95-81. A strong start for the Nation this season as they pounce on their Week One opponent for an easy win. The Fat Bus has struggled in recent years and some thought this might be the year they turn it around. Unfortunately for them, their strategy of drafting a 3rd running back in round 3 of the draft backfired, as Denver starter Mike Anderson got hurt during the first game of the year and scored only 1 point on Sunday. Perhaps The Bus should have been content to just stick with Ahman Green and Deuce McAllister for the year, without trying to get cute. Hindsight is always 20-20, but it seems as though this franchise may be playing blind.

One week is in the books. Taunt you later...
