WEEK FOURTEEN REPORT
(Playoffs Round One)
We have some new faces in our final four!
It's been awhile since the likes of Karen's Komets or TD Taunters have
been playing this late in the year, and never before has Pooh Bott Helmets
found themselves still alive for Week Fifteen. The fourth team with a shot
at the title is Bullseye, who makes their third consecutive final four
appearance. Both TD Taunters and Pooh Bott Helmets enjoyed their Week Fourteen
bye, while Karen's Komets and Bullseye had to win last week to advance
to the second round.
In the first Round One game, Karen's
Komets slipped past Boston
Stranglers, 90-73.
The Komets had no superstars this past week, just a balance of moderate
production up and down their lineup. They made a nice pickup of D/ST Detroit
during the week, and their favorable matchup against the hapless Arizona
Cardinals yielded 8 points. Surprisingly, the strength of their team did
very little. RBs Michael Bennett and Travis Henry combined for only 18
points. Our 2001 champion Boston Stranglers struggled to put up points
this week. QB Aaron Brooks was pulled after halftime with a recurring
injury while their big name receivers did very little. They were a dissapointment
at the end of the year, as they ended the season with a four game losing
streak.
In the other Round One game, Bullseye
exacted some revenge on The Green Party,
127-78. If you
recall, last year the Party knocked Bullseye out in Round Two, en route
to their 2nd place finish. This year Bullseye turned the tables posting
the 2nd highest playoff score all-time. They set a record for the most
points scored by a D/ST with 23 from the Carolina. The Panthers scored
on a fumble recovery, returned two punts for scores and even recorded a
safety. Besdies Carolina, Bullseye enjoyed multiple touchdowns from WRs
Terrell Owens and Keenan McCardell. And both their RBs had long range scores
to go with at least 100 yards rushing. This was an old fashioned rout.
O.K., here is the updated playoff bracket:
Playoff Schedule
With only four teams left, who do you think
will win it all? The league contracted some outside experts to analyze
our final four and this is what they came up with:
|
Bullseye (#5 seed)
They hit the jackpot when they traded for the
top two Jacksonville players, Jimmy Smith and Fred Taylor. How someone
could have fed this perennial powerhouse those two guys is unfathomable.
Add them with top WR Terrell Owens and a solid QB, these guys could
go all the way. But they won't. Why? Because they just don't have quite
as much talent as their opposition. Our expert opinion is that they lose
this week to the Pooh Bott Helmets. And they lose badly at that.

|
Karen's Komets (#3 seed)
Lou Holtz' squad is this year's version of the
"smoke and mirrors" act. It won't be long before the glass breaks.
Despite having solid RBs and a good playoff QB, the Komets have no standouts
at WR. Toomer and Bruce keep defying logic with their late season scoring,
but they are average wideouts at best. Couple them with any other two WRs
on their roster, and the Komets are the league's weakest at the position.
It will take an awful lot of kicker and defense scoring for Lou to advance.

|
Pooh Bott Helmets (#1 seed)
Ricky Williams has rushed for over two hundred
yards and two TDs the last two weeks. He is the top fantasy RB currently.
Harrison is the top fantasy WR and Vick is the top fantasy QB. The Helmets
own all three of these guys along with a strong supporting cast. It's no
doubt we pick the Helmets to go all the way by winning their next two games.
They should easily score over 100 points each week, and only a record breaking
game from one of their opponents can stop them.
|
|
TD Taunters (#2 seed)
Marshall! Marshall! Marshall! Is he going to
play for the Taunters? Our experts think he will. But he will be limited
and won't be as effective as years past. Nonetheless, this squad as talent
all around and should advance to the championship game. But their lack
of a star QB will most likely cost them in the end. Their best chance to
win it all is Marshall. If he can get healthy very quickly, he has the
matchups to explode. But do the Rams care anymore?

Here is my personal take on our Second Round
games:
Bullseye (#5
seed) vs. Pooh Bott Helmets
(#1 seed)
Doctor, Doctor! Has Ricky shot his load the
last two weeks? Yes he has, but I still think he has something left in
the tank. The question I have been asking is will the Helmets play Vick
this week and beyond? All season, they have opted to go with Favre over
Vick at QB, but do they change strategies now that the youngster is breaking
fantasy records? And Bullseye, can they keep starting stiffs like McCardell
and Finneran who produce in spot duty? Lots of question marks with these
two teams, but I think the fact remains: The Helmets have more talent overall.
They should win this game. At least on paper. Final Score: Pooh Bott Helmets
105, Bullseye 99.
Karen's Komets (#3
seed) vs. TD Taunters (#2
seed)
This is a very difficult matchup to forecast.
Both teams are riding incredible winning streaks. Unfortunately for one
of these teams, it is going to end this week. If I knew Marshall's status
I could be definitive in saying the Taunters will taunt. But as of now
I can't. So I have to believe the Murph bullshit factor is back in force
after a long hiatus. How else can you explain their recent winning streak?
No doubt about it, there is something funny in the air. And I don't think
the Taunters will be laughing too hard this week. I'll give the nod in
this one to Holtz. Final Score: Karen's Komets 88, TD Taunters 87.
